Tourism Fiji brings Wilson back to life with nostalgic film celebrating Fiji’s culture

title..

Tourism Fiji has tapped into 25 years of Castaway nostalgia with a heartwarming tribute film that brings one of Hollywood’s most iconic characters back to life: Wilson, the volleyball. The campaign, created by Special PR, celebrates Fiji’s landscapes, culture, and growing film industry while offering fans a long-awaited sequel to a beloved movie moment.

Titled Wilson’s happily ever after, the 90-second hero film follows Wilson after he was last seen drifting away at sea in the 2000 film Castaway. In this lighthearted sequel, Wilson is discovered washed ashore on the pristine beaches of Serenity Island Resort by a young Fijian girl named Lani. Staying true to the famous Fijian spirit of hospitality, Lani brings Wilson into her world, introducing him to the natural wonders and cultural richness of Fiji.

The film follows the duo as they explore some of Fiji’s most breathtaking experiences — biking through lush rainforests on old sugar cane railway tracks with Eco Trax, sharing a traditional kava ceremony, kayaking in the turquoise waters of Vanuabua Beach, and, naturally, enjoying a friendly game of volleyball.

Directed by independent creative James Anderson and produced by Radlab, the tribute aims to reconnect audiences with the emotional connection they felt for Wilson while showcasing the everyday magic of Fiji.

Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, explained, “Wilson’s happily ever after is about sharing the heart of Fiji — the beauty of our people, landscapes, and culture. It reminds travelers of the human warmth and happiness they can experience here, while also highlighting Fiji as a rising hub for international film production.”

Harry Willis, senior PR director at Special PR, emphasized the emotional resonance behind the campaign. “Our goal was to make people feel something for an inanimate object again, just like the original movie did. Wilson’s return not only gives fans closure but offers a beautiful glimpse of the authentic joy that Fiji represents.”

Beyond its storytelling charm, the film also underscores the growing importance of Fiji’s screen industry. The sector now employs over 1,200 Fijians and partners with nearly 300 local businesses. In the 2023–2024 financial year alone, international productions contributed nearly 100 million Fijian dollars to the local economy.

Fiji’s tourism numbers are also seeing a positive rebound, especially from New Zealand, which remains Fiji’s second-largest visitor market. In 2024, Fiji welcomed 226,928 New Zealanders — a 10% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. According to the International Visitor Survey, New Zealanders typically stay 8.3 nights in Fiji, with 81% visiting for leisure, reflecting Fiji’s enduring appeal as a holiday destination.

The tribute film not only offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane for Castaway fans but also reminds viewers that happiness can be found in simple, shared experiences — something Fiji offers in abundance, from its crystal-clear waters to its vibrant local culture.

Through Wilson’s happily ever after, Fiji invites travelers to reconnect with joy, nature, and community, reminding the world that some stories — and some destinations — continue to inspire, decades later.
