McDonald’s Australia is introducing matcha to its McCafé menu, supported by a national campaign from Wieden+Kennedy Sydney that leans into the humor and small indulgences of everyday life. The initiative, titled “You Deserve a Little Treat,” highlights the idea that adulthood is full of minor challenges — and that sometimes, the right response is simply treating oneself.
Long-requested by McCafé fans, the new offerings include a Matcha Iced Latte, Strawberry Matcha Iced Latte, and a Hot Matcha Latte, alongside seasonal iced favorites. The launch taps into a growing demand for matcha-based beverages across Australia, particularly among younger consumers.
The campaign film, directed by Gabriel Gasparinatos, follows the relatable moment when a young person realizes they are finally free to make small adult choices — represented through the first sip of a Strawberry Matcha Iced Latte. The scene frames the drink as a symbol of independence, everyday joy, and self-gifted reward.
Extending beyond traditional media, the campaign embraces a Gen Z tone through playful, situational messaging. Examples include contextual placements on Uber Eats checkout pages reading, “Ordered a big treat? You deserve a little treat,” and T-shirts handed to 6'5” concert-goers reading, “If you’re stuck behind me, you deserve a little treat.”
Amanda Nakad, marketing director of menu and brand for McDonald’s Australia, said the campaign reflects the emotional role McDonald’s plays in everyday life: “Aussies already have a special relationship with Macca’s — it’s where we go to reward ourselves, even in the smallest ways. ‘You Deserve a Little Treat’ taps into that perfectly.”
Wieden+Kennedy Sydney added that the concept draws from shared, everyday “micro-moments”: “Surviving a meeting, surviving summer, surviving adulthood. The humor and self-awareness keep the campaign grounded in real life.”
With matcha now officially part of the McCafé offering, McDonald’s positions itself once more at the intersection of comfort, culture, and simple pleasures.
