At Columbia Sportswear, durability isn’t a buzzword — it’s a legacy. And for this year’s Halloween, the American outdoor brand decided to take that promise to its darkest — and funniest — extreme. In its new campaign, “Death Wishes,” Columbia’s iconic jackets come with something you’d never expect: a last will and testament sewn inside the lining. Yes, a real, legally formatted document meant to be discovered after your death.
Created by adam&eveDDB London, the campaign fits within Columbia’s ongoing platform, “Engineered for Whatever,” which celebrates the toughness and longevity of its gear. But this time, the brand pushes the idea further: if your jacket can survive storms, falls, and decades of wear, maybe — just maybe — it’ll outlive you.
A Grimly Brilliant Idea
To bring the concept to life, Columbia enlisted a surprising ambassador: the Grim Reaper himself. Reimagined as a TikTok influencer with a morbid sense of humor, the cloaked figure stars in a mock-promotional video where he interrupts a dramatic mountain scene to declare that Columbia “makes jackets so tough, they might just bury you.”
The macabre humor struck a chord online. Fans were invited to share their own “near-death experiences” — those close calls in the wilderness, on the slopes, or during hikes gone wrong. The best stories win a Powderkeg II Remastered Interchange Jacket, delivered in a custom coffin-shaped box, complete with a signature from the Reaper himself.
Turning Product Strength into Storytelling
Behind the dark humor and viral content lies a masterclass in brand storytelling. Columbia transforms a technical feature — long-lasting quality — into a narrative about legacy and endurance. What could have been a mundane product claim becomes a story about survival, humor, and human connection.
According to Matt Sutton, Columbia’s Head of Marketing, the idea was inspired by genuine customer anecdotes. “Some of our customers have had their jackets for decades — even passed them down,” he explained. The brand decided to turn this loyalty into a tongue-in-cheek tribute, complete with its very own “Last Will & Outerwear Testament.”
The result? A campaign that feels both eerie and endearing, blending the timelessness of Columbia gear with the irreverence of Halloween pop culture.
A Campaign That Lives On — Literally
With Death Wishes, Columbia proves that sustainability and durability can be fun, memorable, and culturally relevant. The brand succeeds in breaking away from the sterile, performance-driven clichés of the outdoor industry. Instead, it taps into something deeply human — our fascination with mortality and our desire to leave something behind.
By merging dark comedy, cultural wit, and product truth, Columbia achieves what few brands dare to attempt: it turns a jacket into a legend.
And just like the campaign’s tagline suggests, this story — much like a Columbia coat — is built to last.
