WhatsApp debuts Writing Help, an AI tool that rewrites your messages privately

title..

WhatsApp is stepping further into the world of artificial intelligence with the rollout of “Writing Help,” a new feature aimed at helping users find the right tone for their messages. The company says the tool will allow people to choose between professional, humorous, friendly or encouraging styles, while maintaining the platform’s promise of end-to-end privacy.

The function appears through a small pencil icon when drafting a message. A single tap brings up a selection of AI-generated rewrites that users can adopt, tweak or simply ignore. The idea is to simplify a common hesitation in digital conversations: how to phrase a thought without sounding too blunt, too formal, or too casual.

At the heart of the feature is “Private Processing,” a proprietary technology developed in-house by WhatsApp. Unlike most AI systems that rely on cloud servers, Writing Help generates suggestions directly on the user’s device. Neither the original message nor the AI alternatives are sent to WhatsApp or Meta’s servers. In an era of rising skepticism around AI and data harvesting, this emphasis on privacy is likely to resonate with users.

Importantly, the feature is opt-in. Writing Help is not turned on by default; users must actively choose to use it. WhatsApp frames this as a way of adding flexibility without forcing change into the everyday messaging experience.

For now, the tool is being rolled out in English, starting in the United States and a handful of other markets, with a promise to expand to additional languages and regions before the end of the year.

The launch comes as WhatsApp experiments more broadly with AI. Recent tests include real-time voice interactions with Meta AI, suggesting the platform is preparing to move beyond text into conversational interfaces. Against rivals such as Telegram and Apple’s iMessage, both of which are also experimenting with AI-driven features, WhatsApp is betting on a mix of convenience and trust to keep its 2-billion-plus users engaged.

By adding Writing Help, WhatsApp is not just giving people a smarter way to phrase their thoughts. It is reframing what a messaging app can be: a tool where AI enhances everyday communication, but without sacrificing the one value that made the platform indispensable in the first place — privacy.
